I tried solo hiking in France a few years ago, with only a map and guidebook, but was constantly nagged by doubts: Am I where I think I am? Am I translating the guide book correctly? Are there errors in the guide book?

I decided to invest in a Satmap Active 10 and the Whole of Great Britain map card for my trip to Scotland to hike one of their long distance paths. As I was going to be in several areas, it was cheaper for me to go with the 1:50, 000 scale of the whole country, rather than buy many 1:25,000 scale cards of each area. The Ordnance Survey makes the best maps of the UK. The detail is phenomenal, including bodies of water, small streams, major and minor hiking trails as well as neolithic or pictish stones and graves. Once you've looked at these maps, you'll see how ridiculous the UK topo offering from Garmin is, which not only is missing most of those details, it also misses roads!

As I prefer to use a paper map and the way markings were fairly good, I didn't use the gps often; only when I doubted where I was supposed to be, or once I arrived in towns and was trying to find my accommodation for the evening. All the streets showed up on the 1:50, 000, however few were named. I didn't find this to be a problem; walk a few steps in a direction and it shows up on the map which way you are heading.

This was my first time using a gps, and the peace of mind it gave me in having it with me with this fantastic map card were invaluable. If you are considering a walking holiday in the UK, I highly recommend this map. It's only good with the Satmap Active 10, which was designed specifically to make the most of the Ordnance Survey maps. Garmin claims their Britain topo map is from Ordnance Survey, but it pathetically doesn't have even half the detail of this map.
